MONEY MARKETS-U.S. rate-cut bets slip after Trump shelves tariffs on Mexico

(Updates market action, adds graphic)

NEW YORK, June 10 ( ) – U.S. interest rate futures fell on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump late Friday suspended a 5% tariff on Mexican tariffs as Mexico agreed to expand a program to stem the flow of illegal Central American migrants.

Still interest-rate traders’ expectations of multiple rate cuts in 2019, starting as early as July, remained high because of elevated trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.

Disappointing economic data last week, in particular a sharp deceleration in domestic jobs growth in May, increased conviction among traders that Fed policymakers will need to lower key lending rates soon to preserve the current economi上海夜生活c expansion, which this summer would be longest on record.

At 10:05 a.m. (1405 GMT), federal funds futures implied traders saw a 19% chance the U.S. central bank would lower key borrowing costs by a quarter point to 2.00%-2.25% at its June 18-19 meeting, down from a 25% probability late on Friday, according to CME Group’s FedWatch program.

Fed funds contracts suggested traders priced in about a 48% chance the Fed would reduce the overnight costs for banks to borrow reserves from each other by 75 basis points at year-end. This compared with a 54% likelihood late Friday, the FedWatch tool showed.

Ince adamant United need more signings

The former Red Devil believes that Mourinho still has to reinforce some parts of his squad.

Manchester United will likely be in the market for around four players, according to Paul Ince.

The Red Devils completed a swap deal, adding Alexis Sanchez to their ranks, but letting Henrikh Mkhitaryan go in the process. And while they brought in some big names such as Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Neman上海夜生活ja Matić in recent years, Ince remains positive that Mourinho’s squad still need some new additions.

Speaking to Manchester Evening News, the former Red Devil insisted there is a busy summer ahead of the club from Old Trafford:Opinion: Solskjaer needs patience from Manchester United Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – As we enter into one of the most complicated moments for Solskjaer, we believe Manchester United needs to be patient with him.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer…

– There’s a seriously big summer coming for Manchester United. When you’re a club like that, you’re always trying to improve. And sometimes, that means current players lose out, but that’s just how it goes.

– Come summer, I’m expecting around three or four more players to come to Old Trafford. There are still issues to address, and it’s all José Mourinho forming his team.

– He came out the other day and said he thought Luke Shaw was world class. I can see what he’s getting at, but he’s gone from slating him and refusing to playing him to saying he’s one of the best in the world. I know what he’s trying to do, give him a boost, but I’m not sure it’s right to go calling him world class.

Stoichkov believes that Guardiola has been successful because of money

Hristo Stoichkov, the former Barcelona striker, insisted that he believes that Pep Guardiola’s success at Manchester City goes mostly down to the amount of money he has been given as he can buy almost any上海夜生活网 player in the world.

Pep Guardiola has been incredibly successful in his career as he managed to win domestic league and cup with both Bayern Munich and Barcelona – to be added, he also won the Champions League with the Catalonian side. Now, he is about to win the Premier League with his new club but the former player of Barcelona believes that the money has been really important there…

The former Bulgaria international spoke about the former Barca coach as he said, according to Goal: “He was a born leader. Everyone was connected to him on the pitch due to his position in the midfield. Each play started through him. Ronald Koeman got the ball to Guardiola and he did the rest. He became the leader of the play at such a young age for that position. He had a long career with Spain, too.”Top 5 Real Madrid players who are succeeding on a loan Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – We need to talk about the Top 5 Real Madrid players who are currently succeeding away from the club and are currently on a…

He continued by adding that he has been impressed by Mourinho’s career as well: “Mourinho was always a coach, but few knew about it. Mourinho had a special position. He was writing down what each player did, or could not do in the training. Then he was telling Robson about it all. That’s why he is one of the greatest managers in the world. He was always one step ahead.”

In the end, Hristo Stoichkov claimed that Lionel Messi is the greatest player to him: “Messi cannot be compared to anyone. He is the greatest. I want him to win the World Cup, so people will stop comparing to the others. Nobody can do what he does at Barcelona.”

Wijnaldum described van Dijk as “a leader”

Georginio Wijnaldum, the Liverpool 上海夜生活midfielder, spoke about his future teammate, Virgil van Dijk, as he had a chance to play with him in the national team of his country – and he described him to be a “natural leader”.

The former Southampton defender joined the Reds for a record fee and he has become the world’s most expensive defender of history – but Wijnaldum believes that Liverpool won’t regret this decision. The Dutchman is certain that van Dijk will be a great addition to his team’s squad and he thinks that he will start showing that immediately.

The former Newcastle player spoke about his future colleague as he said, according to Sky Sports: “I was really happy when I spoke with him on the phone, I told him I was happy he was going to come and join us. And now there will be a little bit of Dutch support in the changing room. I think outside of the pitch he is a normal person, he’s easy going and relaxed and I think everyone in the club will like him.”Opinion: Martin Odegaard is perfect for the Premier League Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – Given how much he’s been rejected by Real Madrid, we are convinced that Martin Odegaard is perfect for the Premier League.Martin Odegaard is finally…

He also insisted that he is a leader on the pitch: “On the pitch, from what I saw in the national team he is a leader, trying to help everyone, help with the defensive line, so I think he will help us in the team.”

In the end, Jürgen Klopp described why they have decided to bring him for such a crazy fee and also discussed a potential problem: “Quality. That’s why we got him, that’s why we were interested in him. It’s quite difficult at the moment because technically he’s still a Southampton player We only talk about the player and what he can bring in; the quality, the mentality, the character. That is why we are really happy about it.”

Kompany: “Our strikers are hungry form more”

Vincent Kompany, the Manchester City captain, insisted that all the attacking options that his side have increased Sergio Agüreo’s hunger for goals as he netted twice against Bournemouth in Manchester’s last 4-0 win.

Sergi Agüero has been very frustrated lately with the lack of playing time he has been given by Pep Guardiola as Gabriel Jesus has become the City’s number one striker – the Argentinian was given a chance to start against Bournemouth and he was so hungry for goals that he managed to find the net twice and helped his side to a huge 4-0 win away from home to secure their first place in the Premier League.

The Belgian defender spoke about his team’s striker situation as he said, according to ESPN: “These guys are just hungry for more. ‘Kun’ [Sergio Aguero] has always been inclined that way but I think everybody else now up front has a feeling of scoring goals, what it means to be the main man. It is something that doesn’t go away.”Opinion: Martin Odegaard is perfect for the Premier League Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – Given how much he’s been rejected by Real Madrid, we are convinced that Martin Odegaard is perfect for the Premier League.Martin Odegaard is finally…

He also added that he has to praise everyone 上海夜网for working really hard to achieve their common goals: “Everyone is working hard in training, you can tell, to improve whatever they can to score more goals. That helps the team ultimately. We are in a good position with a lot of guys that want to do well.”

In the end, Vincent Kompany insisted that it was a big result to win like that against Bournemouth: “It’s a tremendous result, 4-0, but they had enough of an attacking force to make it difficult for us. Even in the second half, when they went two up front, we really had to be careful with the possession of the ball. But 17 wins a row, it’s something we want to continue – fight against ourselves really if we have to, to make sure we are always improving.”

Wilshere impressed by summer signings

The Gunners midfielder praise highly the impact of Lacazette and Kolašinac.

Jack Wilshere believes that adding Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolašinac to Arsenal’s ranks was a great deal. The Gunners went through yet another relatively quiet summer, with the main topic around the club being the possible departure of Alexis Sanchez.

However, the club from north London landed former Monaco striker Lacazette who took no time to settle in at his new home. Speaking to Arsenal Player about the Frenchman, Wilshere stated: “Lacazette, of course [has impressed].

“I think he’s gone a little bit under the radar with Morata [doing so well], but to come in from the French league to a big club in England and score four goals in his first seven or eight games [is very good].

“He’s doing well and he’s only going to get better. While Wenger spent big on their new striker, Arsenal added Kolašinac on a free tra上海夜生活论坛nsfer from Schalke and have seen the 24-year-old turn into the bargain of the summer.

“Sead’s turned into a real fans’ favourite because he’s no-nonsense, even in training.” Wilshere added regarding the defender.

“He’s a natural-born winner. He’s a monster physically and you’d hate to play against him.

“You look at when the winger receives the ball, he’s onto him, not giving him an inch. He wins the ball back a lot for the team, so he’s doing well.”

Rashford feels that the winning mentality is back

Marcus Rashford is happy with the current form of his side and he said that everybody can feel that “the winning mentality is back” but there is still a long way to go to match the days when there was the glorious Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad.

Rashford has had a perfect introduction to the United first team, going from the academy to winning four trophies in the senior side within just 21 months. The England forward won the 2016 FA Cup under Louis van Gaal before claiming Europa League, EFL Cup and Community Shield winners’ medals under current boss Jose Mourinho, according to Sky Sports.

The England international spoke about his feelings about winning more trophies and the success of the current squad: “There are so many different incidents that can easily pass you by and you forget about. As soon as you win a trophy, in my mind straight away, you’re thinking about winning the next trophy. That’s when you can miss the moment of enjoying winning that trophy, it’s difficult.”Top 5 Premier League players in September’s last weekend Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – A fresh Premier League fixture just ended, which means we can talk about the Top 5 best players of September’s last weekend. After a fresh…

Marcus Rashford also added: “We went through that second year and won three trophies in the year, so we were winning things and winning things and it became normal for us. That’s what United has always been about, so it is important for us to try and get that feeling back to Old Trafford of winning.”

But he believes that the current team has got everything required to write their own history: “It’s definitely coming back, but where they were to where we are now, we’ve still got a long way to go because they were consecutively winning. Consecutively winning is different to winning one thing or winning two things. It’s more difficult be上海夜生活网cause everybody wants to beat you. We want to make it (Old Trafford) the fortress that it was before. I think we’re on a path back to doing that. We’ve got the right manager, we have the right staff, so it’s just about producing now on the field.”

Ince doesn’t understand Lukaku’s critics

Paul Ince simply can’t understand the critics of Romelu Lukaku – the Belgian has failed to score for six matches in a row now and after his great start, he fails to meet the expectations of the fans and pundits.

José Mourinho, the Manchester United manager, was a bit upset about the criticism of Lukaku and he is not the only one – Paul Ince fully agrees with the Portuguese coach and backed him. There is no reason for criticizing the 24-year old striker as he is just at the beginning of his career at Old Trafford.

The former Red Devils star spoke about the current situation as he claimed, according to Goal: “Jose Mourinho was absolutely right to criticise the Man United fans after the Tottenham game. When Romelu L上海夜生活网ukaku came to Manchester United, and he was bagging goals for fun, no one was saying a thing. Not one United fan was moaning.”Wijnaldum looking to repeat Champions League success Nedim Maric – Liverpool are the reigning winners of the Champions League. However, this isn’t stopping them for aiming to get the glory once again. After a perfect…

He wants the haters to give him a proper reason for the criticism: “We’re talking about someone who has scored 11 goals for United already, and we’re only at the start of November. Let’s get it right. So, when I see that Mourinho has had a dig at the fans for booing, I literally couldn’t agree with him anymore for doing that. Those fans needed telling. When I was playing, even when things were going badly wrong, fans would support their team. They’re called supporters for a reason. And I think there’s a huge difference between ‘fans’ and ‘supporters’ nowadays.”

Paul Ince also made a comment about the United fans: “When you look at Huddersfield fans, they are what you would call a traditional supporter. They stick by their team whether things are going right or wrong. I was at Anfield for the game last week, and they didn’t stop singing, even when they were three goals down.”

Rudiger admits he ‘dreamt’ of Chelsea move

The Germany international cannot wait to play in the Premier League.

Antonio Rudiger is more than happy to finally be a part of the Premier League champions. The player joined Chelsea in a £34 million move from Roma, after being linked with the Blues a number of times in the past.

The full-back now admits he has been waiting for ‘years’ to finally join Chelsea and experience the Premier League. Speaking to ChelseaFC.com, Rudiger said:

“I wanted to play in the Premier League and it is now years that my name was linked to Chelsea.

“Now I am here and I am very happy. I want to thank all of the people who made this come true.”Chelsea need owner Abramovich back at the Bridge George Patchias – Chelsea football club apparently is missing their owner Roman Abramovich, and hi上海夜生活论坛s return is key to the team’s success. That the theory from former Chelsea…

The 24-year-old knows he is diving into the unknown since the English Premier League is much different from Serie A and its competitiveness is much higher.

“I cannot say much about the Premier League because I did not experience it yet.

“But the Italian league is more tactical. You don’t have open games but here in England it is different, both teams are attacking the whole time so that is the main big difference, and of course the physical aspect in England.

“I think the whole league is a big challenge so I need to be prepared for each game.”

Lazar Markovi\u0107 in talks with Fiorentina

The player has been left out of Liverpool’s 30-man squad for friendlies in Germany.

The上海夜网 Serbia international is surplus to requirements at Anfield, as he has spent the last two seasons on a loan at Fenerbahçe and Sporting Lisbon.

Recently, Klopp stated he did not see Lazar in Liverpool’s future plans:

“With Lazar, it’s no secret that if he finds a club then we will negotiate,” Klopp told the Liverpool Echo. “It was like this last year too.

The player is now believed to be negotiating with Fiorentina. According to Press Association Sport, the 23-year-old is close to joining the Serie A side, but Liverpool are looking for a £16million bid to part ways with the player.

Watford are also believed to be interested in the Serbian, as British media indicated the club from Vicarage Road were keen to land the midfielder. However, Liverpool’ high demands when it comes to the price of Marković have completely put off Watford.

An intense Derbi Barceloni awaits tonight

Tonight, is the Derbi Barcelona being played and Espanyol would love to beat city rivals FC BarcelonaWritten by Christian Møller Poulsen. April 29, 2017

As always it is intense when the two teams clash and even more so when Espanyol is at home. At the RCED Stadium the crowd has a sympathy for Real Madrid rather than FC Barcelona, and it would bring joy to the fans if they could help Los Blancos closer to the title.

The relationship between the sides is under pressure to say it at least. The crowd hates each other, and it would mean a lot for the Espanyol fans if they could beat Barca.

At FC Barcelona, the emotions for the neighbor club is also strained, as many of the fans dislike Espanyol even more than Real Madrid.

Even the two coaches of the sides have a strained relationship as Luis Enrique and Quique Sánches Flores, and the coaches would not meet for the traditional derby photo in the first meeting in this season, nor will they be doing today.

At the RCED Stadium there is always a hateful and intense atmosphere when Barca visits, and it inspires Espanyol to play上海夜生活网 roughly and at times violent. However, Barcelona has a firm grip on Espanyol as they haven’t loss in the RCED Stadium since 2007.Inter Milan V Lazio: Players to Watch Taimoor Khan – Inter Milan are set to host Lazio at the San Siro on Thursday and the game is definitely going to be an exciting affair…

Zidane\u2019s favourite for the Ballon d’Or race

Zinedine Zidane already knows who should win the Ballon d’Or this year.Written by Cosmin Mihalescu. May 6, 2017.

Zidane’s favourite is non-other than his own player, Cristiano Ronaldo. Zidane is certain that the Portuguese fully deserves to win the trophy for the fifth time.

“It’s my opinion. He deserves it. Yes, as he already won the Ballon d’Or multiple times, I think he is close to another one,” said the French manager.Inter Milan V Lazio: Players to Watch Taimoor Khan – Inter Milan are set to host Lazio at the San Siro on Thursday and the game is definitely going to be an exciting affair…

Having scored a hat-trick in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals, when Real won 3-0 against city rivals Atletico, Ronaldo has become the only player in history to score two consecutive hat-tricks in the knockout stages of the competition. And in doing so, he has pretty much secured Real Madrid’s place in the Cardiff final.

The press in Madrid already speaks about Ronaldo levelling the score in the Ballon d’Or winners’ list, by reaching the same number of trophies as Lionel Messi.

Although Ronaldo has gone through a rough period recently, when he was whistled by the Bernabéu crowd, Zidane ensured the Portuguese of th上海夜生活e full support of the club: “He is respected here. By all the fans of Real, by the club, by his manager and, obviously, by his teammates, which is the most important. You either love or hate Ronaldo, there is no middle way and he knows that”, Zizou said.

Occidental finance chief pledges to quickly pare acquisition debt

DENVER ( ) – Occidental Petroleum Corp (OXY.N) expects to quickly reduce the $40 billion in debt it took on with its purchase of Anadarko Petroleum, the company’s finance chief said on Monday.

Cedric Burgher, in his first public remarks since the $38 billion acquisition closed 上海夜生活last week, told an EnerCom energy conference audience, the resulting debt burden was “not too bad,” and pledged Occidental would be selective in choosing assets to sell.

He defended the purchase, which has been attacked by activist Carl Icahn as “misguided and hugely overpriced,” as providing future oil production as a good valuation. Icahn is seeking to remove and replace four directors to influence the scale and pace of asset sales.

“When the smoke clears, people will start to see what we’ve done,” Burgher said to an overflow crowd.

Shares of Occidental fell 4.5% on Monday to $45.01, the lowest level in roughly a decade following a downgrade from analysts at investment firm Evercore ISI.

“The purchase of Anadarko makes Occidental larger but significantly less valuable,” Evercore analysts wrote in a note to investors on Monday.

Burgher said the deal would achieve $3.5 billion in synergies and cost savings through divestitures and by eliminating redundancies, including duplicate offices.

The company plans to keep Anadarko’s campus in Woodlands, Texas, indefinitely, and make a decision on the space in several years, Burgher said. It plans to remain in Houston and will sell a property that was acquired last year for a new Houston headquarters, he said.

Occidental also plans to be selective about what properties it puts on the market to help pay off the debt, he also said, saying it likes the U.S. offshore production acquired in the deal.

“We like the Gulf of Mexico (properties) we think it’s a keeper; great free cash flow, great assets,” he said. He made no mention of the Western Midstream Partners stake that it also acquired with Anadarko.

Campbell confirms sale of Australian snacks unit Arnott’s to KKR for $2.2 billion

( ) – Campbell Soup Co (CPB.N) on Friday confirmed that it signed a deal to sell its Australian snacks unit Arnott’s and some of its international operations to KKR & Co Inc (KKR.N) for $2.2 billion as the U.S. company works on reducing debt.

Campbell and KKR will enter into a long-term licensing arrangement for the exclusive rights to use certain Campbell brands, including Campbell’s, Swanson, V8, Prego, Chunky and Campbell’s Real Stock, in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and other select markets, the company said.

“This was a thorough and complex process in which we considered many options,” Campbell Chief Executive Officer Mark Clouse said.

“By applying almost $3 billion of divestiture net proceeds to reduce debt, Campbell’s balance sheet will be stronger and capable of supporting our plan to grow our focused and differentiated portfolio,” he said.

KKR & Co said last week it was buying Campbell’s Arnott’s that will give it ownership of top-selling biscuit brands such as Tim Tam.

Campbell put its international unit and ‘Fresh’ unit up for sale last year as it wanted to focus on its core North American businesses and reduce debt. It was also under pressure from investors to impr上海夜网ove profitability and stock performance.

In July, U.S. packaged food company said it would sell its Danish unit Kelsen Group to an affiliate of Nutella maker Ferrero SpA for $300 million.

Carrefour sees more retail sector consolidation, including in France

PARIS ( ) – The boss of Carrefour said on Friday the retail sector was bound to consolidate in the coming years, notably in France, as competition intensifies, and that his mission was to make sure the French retailer came out a winner.

When asked if Carrefour could exit underperforming countries上海夜生活 such as Italy or China, Alexandre Bompard told an annual shareholders meeting he was confident his overhaul plan “could improve the operational situation in each of our countries”.

Carrefour, which is Europe’s largest retailer, is in the midst of a five-year plan it launched in January 2018 to cut costs and jobs, boost e-commerce investment and seek a partnership in China with Tencent.

Carrefour’s plan, which also entails a greater focus on areas such as fresh local products, organic food and sustainability, is aimed at helping the retailer boost profits and revenues, and tackle competition from Amazon.

“There are a lot of competitors in markets like Italy or in France and weak sector margins and we are only at the beginning of the arrival of large platforms like Amazon. There will be difficulties and consolidations in coming years,” Bompard said.

“My mission is to be in the winners’ camp and the transformation we are conducting will put us among winners,”

Last year, Carrefour and French rival Casino were locked in a dispute after Casino said it had rejected a tie-up approach from Carrefour that Carrefour denied making.

Since then, Casino’s parent Rallye has filed for protection from creditors.

Meanwhile, French rival Auchan has sold most of its loss-making business in Italy, while it also faces tough market conditions in France.

Last month, people familiar with the matter told that Carrefour was exploring the sale of a minority stake in its loss-making business in China and had started sounding out potential buyers.

The group has, however, said a sale of the business in China was not on the agenda.

In line with Carrefour’s ambition to become a leader in the global transition towards healthier and more sustainable food, its shareholders on Friday approved a new mission statement to include its commitment to the transition in its bylaws.

American Airlines CEO sees Boeing 737 MAX flying by mid-August

CHICAGO ( ) – The grounded Boeing Co 737 MAX is “highly likely” to be flying by mid-August, American Airlines Group Inc Chief Executive Doug Parker told shareholders on Wednesday.

A battered aviation industry is awaiting regulatory approval for a software fix and pilot training updates by Boeing that would pave the way for the troubled jet to fly again following two deadly crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia within five months.

American Airlines has said the economic impact of the grounded MAX would be about $350 million between its worldwide grounding in mid-March and Aug. 19, when the airline had initially envisioned flying its 24 MAX jets again.

On Sunday, American extended cancellations of about 115 daily flights until Sept. 3, but Parker said that decision merely reflected monthly scheduling plans for crew.

“No one should take that as some indication that we don’t think the aircraft will be ready by Aug 19,” 上海夜生活网Parker said during the company’s annual shareholders meeting.

“We wouldn’t be selling seats today if we didn’t think it was a highly likely possibility (…) that we’d be able to provide that service by Sept. 3,” he added.

Boeing has yet to formally submit its software fix to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, which said on Wednesday it does not have a specific timetable on when the 737 MAX would return to service.

Still, Parker said he understood there was “an absolute fix” for the 737 MAX, while acknowledging there was no certain timetable and that rebuilding public confidence may take time.

Once regulators approve the MAX, airlines will need some time to train pilots on the software fix, meant to prevent the erroneous triggering of a system called MCAS that played a role in the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes, and to prepare the jets following months of storage.

Before the jet flies commercially, Parker said he and other executives would fly in the MAX and noted that if American pilots were comfortable taking up the aircraft, over time, the flying public would recognize that it is safe.

Speaking on CNBC on Wednesday, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said he believed consumer confidence would take a while to restore, and that a MAX return to service was “probably going to be longer than anyone would like it to be.”

Shares in Delta, which does not operate the MAX, have outperformed those of U.S. rivals with the jets. American shares, which have lost about 4% this year, were up 1.2% on Wednesday.

No let-up in anger in U.S. campaigns after spate of violence

WASHINGTON – Anger over the weekend massacre of 11 people at a Pennsylvania synagogue spilled onto the U.S. campaign trail with just over a week to go before elections that will determine control of Congress.

The shooting, which prosecutors said was a hate crime carried out by a gunman who said he wanted to kill Jewish people, followed a wave of more than a dozen package bombs that were sent to prominent critics of President Donald Trump last week, and was widely seen as showing a rising level of rage and violence in U.S. politics.

While elected leaders from both parties voiced sympathy for the victims and denounced violence, the incidents did little to cool the tone of campaigns that will determine whether Trump’s Republican Party keeps control of both houses of Congress in the Nov. 6 elections.

Democrats would need a net gain of 23 seats in the House of Representatives and two in the Senate to take majorities that would allow them to more effectively oppose Trump’s agenda. Nonpartisan forecasters and opinion polls generally give them a good chance of winning the House, with Republicans widely expected to keep control of the Senate.

Following the pattern of mass shootings that have become a recurrent feature over American life over the past few years, Saturday’s massacre in Pittsburgh inflamed the nation’s long-running debate on gun rights, with Trump suggesting that armed guards could have prevented the killing.

“No, Mr. President, the synagogue is not at fault for being insufficiently armed,” Scott Wallace, a Democrat running for Congress in eastern Pennsylvania, said in a weekend statement. “To say that the solution to gun violence is more guns, is like saying that the solution to lung cancer is more cigarettes.”

U.S. Representative Keith Rothfus, a western Pennsylvania Republican, stayed away from the gun rights issue while condemning the prejudice that allegedly motivated the attack.

“You look at what this particular shooter was doing, the vile comments that he had put out there on social media, the anti-Semitic hatred that he was spewing forth,” Rothfus said in a Monday interview on Fox News. “Somebody was aware of the animus.”

Reactions to mass shootings often divide along roughly party lines. Broadly, Democrats favor more controls on gun ownership as a way of reducing gun violence, while Republicans push back against efforts to introduce tighter gun controls, noting that the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects the right to bear arms.

Liberal protesters who crashed a Tennessee rally on Sunday for Republican U.S. Representative Marsha Blackburn’s Senate campaign drew her criticism for repeatedly trying to shout her down, including during a moment of silence intended to remember those killed at the synagogue.

“It is a sad day when Phil Bredesen’s party will go as far as interrupting a moment of silence for the victims of Pittsburgh in order to protest,” Blackburn said on Twitter, referring to her Democratic rival, a former governor of the state. “There is no excuse to choose confrontation, ambush, attack or any form of violence to deal with differences of opinion.”

The violence did not bring a return to civility, with Trump weighing in on Monday on the Florida governor’s race, where he has endorsed former U.S. Representative Ron DeSantis over Democratic Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum.

In a tweet, Trump called Gillum “a thief” and said Tallahassee is “one of the most corrupt cities in the Country.” Florida media have reported that the FBI is investigating Tallahassee’s government. G上海夜生活网illum has said he is not the probe’s target. FBI officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Gillum said on Monday said the name-calling is leading to violence.

“That kind of irresponsible language is now leading to loss of life,” Gillum told reporters, calling it “dangerous rhetoric.”

GE’s CEO ‘stunned’ that factory efficiency drive only just started

(This May 30 story corrects to say GE is cutting power unit headquarters costs 20% and GE plans to cut another $800 mln in power divison costs, not $1.6 bln in the 6th and last paragraph respectively.)

By Alwyn Scott

NEW YORK ( ) – General Electric Co’s chief executive said on Thursday he was “really stunned” to learn that a major factory had only recently started using lean manufacturing techniques.

“It put me back a little bit to go to our Greenville, South Carolina, plant last summer and to have the team regale me with a really good lean production (project) that had just been implemented,” Larry Culp said at an investor conference in New York.

“They did a very nice job. But just — it really stunned me (to) be there in the summer of 2018 and have such an important plant at GE beginning its lean journey or re-beginning its lean journey.”

Lean techniques are widely used to reduce manufacturing costs while increasing efficiency and quality. GE’s Greenville factory makes large, gas-fired turbines that generate electricity 上海夜生活网in power plants around the world. GE’s power business has been losing money and is the top priority in Culp’s efforts to turn around the company.

“No business consumes more of my time right now,” Culp said.

Culp also affirmed on Thursday that GE expects negative free cash flow in the second quarter, and said GE’s power division plans to cut headquarters costs of $1.6 billion by about 20% over the next two years as it tries to become leaner.

Culp said GE cut about $800 million in costs at the power unit last year, and has plans to cut another $800 million through 2020, including the headquarter cost cuts.

SEOUL/MONTREAL ( ) – When Pakistan closed its airspace during conflict with India in February, Malaysia Airlines was not one of the carriers left scrambling to re-route flights because it had already done so two weeks earlier, the carrier’s chief executive said.

Nearly five years after Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down by a missile over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board, carriers like Malaysia Airlines are increasingly taking steps to uncover any threats to their planes.

But concerns persist over inadequate government intelligence sharing and a reluctance by countries involved in conflict to divulge information or sacrifice overflight fees by shutting their skies, safety experts said.

“The wound is still here in the whole organization and we take safety very seriously,” Malaysia Airlines chief executive Izham Ismail told on the sidelines of an International Air Transport Association (IATA) conference in Seoul.

In the aftermath of the shooting down of MH17, the aviation industry backed the creation by a U.N. agency of a conflict zone website as a one-stop repository for route planning.

But when the site was later closed after complaints from some countries over information-sharing, airlines turned elsewhere for advice.

“For the big 50 airlines, they have the resources to dedicate a security department to the job,” said Mark Zee, founder of OPSGROUP, which launched the free website Safe Airspace to provide guidance after MH17.

“For everyone else – and that is thousands of operators, I can tell you that many of them have a really hard time making a decent risk assessment. I see it in the emails we get every day.”

Airlines are spending millions of dollars a year on extra fuel flying roundabout routes in the Middle East and Africa to avoid conflict zones.

And carriers still see routes above war-torn countries differently, just like before MH17, when British Airways and Air France avoided eastern Ukraine, but Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines flew over it.

“This is where we need better information,” IATA Senior Vice President, Safety and Flight Operations Gilberto Lopez-Meyer said in Seoul.

Qatar Airways, for one, recently returned to flying over Syria as part of its efforts to grapple with a two-year Gulf dispute that has blocked it from using the airspace of many of its neighbors. CEO Akbar al-Baker said the airline would not fly anywhere that is not safe.

The United States and other countries ban their airlines from flying over Syrian airspace at any altitude due to safety risks, according to a European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) conflict zone website set up after MH17.

Yet the resources that are available to airlines often communicate changing threat levels too slowly and informally to be of use, according to the Dutch Safety Board, which led the MH17 investigation and released post-crash recommendations in February this year.

While the Netherlands shares confidential information on threats to its own carriers on a formal basis, other countries remain reluctant to do so.

The site set up after M上海夜生活网H17 by the U.N.’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) closed after “states objected to anybody but themselves publishing information about hazards in their airspace”, said a source involved with the creation of the site who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Instead, the use of commercial services like OPSGROUP grew among airlines polled after MH17, the Dutch Safety Board said.

“I think after MH17 people became more aware of the problem. They seek information,” said Mohammed Aziz, a former Lebanese air accident investigator who is now a consultant with Aviation Strategies International.

“The problem is before they weren’t seeking information. They were waiting for information to come their way.”

Montreal-based ICAO has also called for air traffic service authorities to report conflict zone hazards in notices to pilots. But these new requirements do not take effect until November 2020 and still put the onus on countries to share information.

“Rules alone do not change the behavior of states,” said Jeff Poole, director general of the Civil Air Services Navigation Organization (CANSO).

“However, we see that more and more states take the correct responsibility.”
