Thousands at rallies demand Trump release tax returns

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON ( ) – Tens of thousands of people marched through midtown Manhattan and dozens of U.S. cities on Saturday to demand that President Donald Trump release his tax returns and t上海夜生活o dispute his claim that the public does not care about the issue.

Organizers of “Tax March” in more than 150 cities across the country and beyond wanted to call attention to Trump’s refusal to disclose his tax history, as his White House predecessors have done for more than 40 years.

The marches coincide with the traditional April 15 deadline for U.S. federal tax returns, though the filing date was pushed backed two days this year.

There were no reports of violence or arrests, in contrast to a clash between Trump supporters and opponents that erupted at a rally in Berkeley, California, where nine people were arrested.

Two of the biggest tax marches took place in New York and Los Angeles, with each drawing about 5,000 people, according to estimates by reporters. No official estimates were immediately available.

In Manhattan, a good-natured crowd rallied at Bryant Park before marching up Sixth Avenue to Central Park.

Among the marchers was an oversized inflatable rooster, sporting an angry expression and a sweeping metallic orange hairdo meant to resemble Trump’s signature style.

“Thanks to Trump, I think that releasing your taxes when you run for president now has to be a law,” said New Yorker Marni Halasa, 51, who arrived in a tutu and leggings made of fake dollar bills and holding a sign that read “Show Me The Money!”

In Washington, more than 1,500 protesters gathered on the front lawn of the U.S. Capitol, where members of Congress addressed the crowd before it marched to the Lincoln Memorial.

“We are taking the gloves off to say knock off the secrecy Mr. President,” said Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, which would play a leading role in tax reform measures being considered in Congress.

He described Trump’s refusal to release his taxes as being “like a teenager trying to hide a lousy report card.”

TAX REFORM

Among the marchers was Melinda Colwell, 34, a stay-at-home-mother from Ledyard, Connecticut. She said she was concerned that conflicts of interest in Trump’s tax returns might foreshadow selfish interests in his tax reform policies.

“I think it’s important to know how that could influence his decisions and how he could benefit from the decisions being made,” she said.

As a candidate and as president, Trump has refused to release his tax returns, citing an ongoing audit by the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS has said that Trump can release his tax returns even while under audit.

The White House could not be reached immediately for comment on the marches.

Events were also planned in cities in Europe, Japan and New Zealand.

The marches were launched by a single tweet, organizers said. A day after the massive Jan. 21 women’s march in Washington and other cities, comedy writer Frank Lesser tapped out on Twitter, “Trump claims no one cares about his taxes. The next mass protest should be on Tax Day to prove him wrong.” It has been retweeted more than 21,000 times.

In Los Angeles, television director Mike Stutz turned up at the march dressed in costume as a Russian general and said he was called General Bullshitski. He carried a sign that read: “What Tax Returns? Putin paid cash. Trust your oligarchs,” referring to allegations of contacts between Trump’s campaign and Russia, led by President Vladimir Putin.

Joe Dinkin, spokesman for the Working Families Party, one of the groups organizing the marches, said investigations into the Trump campaign’s alleged connections to Russia underscore the need to disclose his returns.

“Without seeing his taxes, we’ll never really know who he’s working for,” said Dinkin, who expects the marches to draw at least 100,000 protesters.

There have been some glimpses into Trump’s tax history. Last month, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow reported on two pages of Trump’s 2005 return that were obtained by investigative reporter David Cay Johnston and released by DCReport.org. They showed Trump paid $38 million in taxes on more than $150 million in income.

And in October, The New York Times reported that Trump had declared a $916 million loss on his 1995 federal tax return, citing three pages of documents from the return.

SQM receives Chile’s approval for lithium plant expansion

SANTIAGO ( ) – Chilean lithium miner SQM on Thursday received environmental approval to expand its lithium carbonate production plant, the local environmental regulator told , marking a milestone as the company seeks to boost output of the coveted ultralight battery metal.

The $400 million plant expansion, once complete, would allow the Chinese-backed SQM to eventually produce as much as 180,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate a year from its Atacama salt flat operations in Chile.

SQM is the world’s number two producer of lithium, a key component in the batteries that power electric vehicles, cell phones and other consumer goods. China’s Tianqi Lithium Corp bought a stake in the firm last year.

SQM CEO Ricard上海夜生活论坛o Ramos earlier this week said he expected the expansion, if approved, would come online “in the future,” but did not specify a date.

SQM has previously said it hopes to be able to produce 120,000 tonnes annually by 2020, nearly double its current capacity of 70,000 tonnes.

Water has become a key sticking point for the expansion plans of both SQM and top competitor Albemarle, both of which operate in the Atacama desert, the world’s driest. Soaring lithium demand has raised questions about whether the Atacama salt flat can support current and future levels of production.

SQM vice president Alejandro Bucher said in a statement that he believed the plant expansion approved on Thursday would contribute to sustainable development of the region.

“One of the most relevant benefits of this project is the optimization of water use for production,” Bucher said.

GLOBAL MARKETS-Shares at five-month high, sterling rides Brexit twists

(Updates prices, comment; changes dateline, previous LONDON)

* World shares up for 7th session, touch highest since October

* Oil hits 2019 high, palladium at record

By Rodrigo Campos

NEW YORK, March 19 ( ) – Stock markets across the world rose on Tuesday for a seventh session, the longest winning streak of the year, while sterling wobbled against the U.S. dollar on expectations European Union officials would allow Britain a delay on Brexit negotiations.

Bets that the U.S. Federal Reserve will this week reinforce a market view that the U.S. monetary policy-tightening cycle is in the rear-view mirror have kept the bid on stocks alive, while the dollar index touched its lowest since March 1.

“There is optimism that the Fed is going to keep rates on hold, the economy is chugging along and we don’t see any inflation,” said Robert Pavlik, chief investment strategist and senior portfolio manager at SlateStone Wealth LLC in New York.

“Investors don’t want to miss out on the low interest rate environment which will help fuel the rise in stock prices.”

Investors will particularly look to see whether policymakers have sufficiently lowered their interest rate forecasts to more closely align their “dot plot,” which shows individual policymakers’ rate views for the next three years.

The CitiFX U.S. economic surprise index, which measures economic data against expectations, has been negative for over a month, and earlier in March, touched its lowest since August 2017.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 87.22 points, or 0.34 percent, to 26,001.32, the S&P 500 gained 6.04 points, or 0.21 percent, to 2,838.98 and the Nasdaq Composite added 12.30 points, or 0.16 percent, to 7,726.78.

MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe gained 0.32 percent, while the pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 0.57 percent.

Emerging market stocks rose 0.12 percent. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan closed 0.07 percent higher, while Japan’s Nikkei lost 0.08 percent.

BREXIT OPTIONS

In currency markets, sterling touched $1.3311 after slipping to as low as $1.3241 as traders expected EU officials to allow Britain a delay on Brexit negotiations, though the uncertainty kept the market volatile. Sterling was last trading at $1.3261, up 0.05 percent on the day.

“The predominant notion adopted by the market is that as long as the worst case scenario of hard Brexit is avoided by delaying Brexit, the pound is a buy on dips,” Rabobank strategists said in a note.

The dollar index, tracking the greenback against six major peers, fell 0.16 percent, with the euro up 0.1 percent to $1.1347.

The Japanese yen strengthened 0.03 percent versus the dollar to 111.39 per dollar.

Among commodities, oil prices were at 2019 highs, supported by supply cuts led by producer club OPEC. U.S. sanctions against oil producers Iran and Venezuela were also boosting prices, although traders said the market may be capped by rising U.S. output.

U.S. crude fell 0.44 percent to $58.83 per barrel and Brent was last at $67.32, down 0.33 percent on the day.

Precious metal palladium, used in things like car catalytic converters, dipped after it topped the $1,600 an 上海夜网ounce mark for the first time on supply concerns.

Palladium last lost 0.26 percent to $1,579.42 an ounce. Prices have nearly doubled since their mid-August lows and have surged more than 25 percent this year.

Spot gold added 0.3 percent to $1,307.54 an ounce. U.S. gold futures gained 0.45 percent to $1,307.40 an ounce.

Copper rose 0.76 percent to $6,474.00 a tonne.

U.S. Treasury yields followed German government bonds higher as the Fed’s interest rate policy-setting meeting began. Benchmark 10-year notes fell 4/32 in price to yield 2.6159 percent, from 2.601 percent late on Monday.

The 30-year bond fell 17/32 in price to yield 3.0375 percent, from 3.01 percent late on Monday.

Stoichkov believes that Guardiola has been successful because of money

Hristo Stoichkov, the former Barcelona striker, insisted that he believes that Pep Guardiola’s success at Manchester City goes mostly down to the amount of money he has been given as he can buy almost any上海夜生活网 player in the world.

Pep Guardiola has been incredibly successful in his career as he managed to win domestic league and cup with both Bayern Munich and Barcelona – to be added, he also won the Champions League with the Catalonian side. Now, he is about to win the Premier League with his new club but the former player of Barcelona believes that the money has been really important there…

The former Bulgaria international spoke about the former Barca coach as he said, according to Goal: “He was a born leader. Everyone was connected to him on the pitch due to his position in the midfield. Each play started through him. Ronald Koeman got the ball to Guardiola and he did the rest. He became the leader of the play at such a young age for that position. He had a long career with Spain, too.”Top 5 Real Madrid players who are succeeding on a loan Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – We need to talk about the Top 5 Real Madrid players who are currently succeeding away from the club and are currently on a…

He continued by adding that he has been impressed by Mourinho’s career as well: “Mourinho was always a coach, but few knew about it. Mourinho had a special position. He was writing down what each player did, or could not do in the training. Then he was telling Robson about it all. That’s why he is one of the greatest managers in the world. He was always one step ahead.”

In the end, Hristo Stoichkov claimed that Lionel Messi is the greatest player to him: “Messi cannot be compared to anyone. He is the greatest. I want him to win the World Cup, so people will stop comparing to the others. Nobody can do what he does at Barcelona.”

Kompany: “Our strikers are hungry form more”

Vincent Kompany, the Manchester City captain, insisted that all the attacking options that his side have increased Sergio Agüreo’s hunger for goals as he netted twice against Bournemouth in Manchester’s last 4-0 win.

Sergi Agüero has been very frustrated lately with the lack of playing time he has been given by Pep Guardiola as Gabriel Jesus has become the City’s number one striker – the Argentinian was given a chance to start against Bournemouth and he was so hungry for goals that he managed to find the net twice and helped his side to a huge 4-0 win away from home to secure their first place in the Premier League.

The Belgian defender spoke about his team’s striker situation as he said, according to ESPN: “These guys are just hungry for more. ‘Kun’ [Sergio Aguero] has always been inclined that way but I think everybody else now up front has a feeling of scoring goals, what it means to be the main man. It is something that doesn’t go away.”Opinion: Martin Odegaard is perfect for the Premier League Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – Given how much he’s been rejected by Real Madrid, we are convinced that Martin Odegaard is perfect for the Premier League.Martin Odegaard is finally…

He also added that he has to praise everyone 上海夜网for working really hard to achieve their common goals: “Everyone is working hard in training, you can tell, to improve whatever they can to score more goals. That helps the team ultimately. We are in a good position with a lot of guys that want to do well.”

In the end, Vincent Kompany insisted that it was a big result to win like that against Bournemouth: “It’s a tremendous result, 4-0, but they had enough of an attacking force to make it difficult for us. Even in the second half, when they went two up front, we really had to be careful with the possession of the ball. But 17 wins a row, it’s something we want to continue – fight against ourselves really if we have to, to make sure we are always improving.”

Preview: Borussia Monchengladbach – Schalke

In the late Bundesliga (BL) match on Saturday, Borussia Monchengladbach host Schalke in a game between two sides separated by just one point and one place in the table and with both sides harbouring Champions League aspirations.

Flashscore presents the key facts before the match:

Last week’s 3-0 defeat away to Wolfsburg ended Monchengladbach’s four game unbeaten streak which saw them collect ten points from a possible 12. However, that streak is eclipsed by the run of Schalke, who are unbeaten in eight BL games.

Schalke have scored the most goals from set pieces (eleven) in the BL this season, followed by Monchengladbach in joint second (ten). Part of the reason for the success from set pieces is that both teams have skilfull, tall defenders who cause trouble in the opposition’s box. Jannik Vestergaard and Matthias Ginter (both Monchengladbach) have both scored three goals (no defender in BL has scored more goals) while Schalke’s Naldo has two goals.

Furthermore, the two teams are extremely clever in the opposition’s box, as the Royal Blues (Schalke) and Monchengladbach already have won five penalties – and all ten penalties found the back of the net!Niko Kovac urges Bayern Munich to remain ‘humble’ Andrew Smyth – Niko Kovac has called on Bayern Munich to stay focused and humble after thrashing Tottenham 7-2 in the Champions League.

Monchengladbach have not been able to score more than two goals in any of their last twelve home games. The last time the team scored more than two goals was against….yes, you guessed it, Schalke (4-2 March this year).

For Schalke’s manager, Tedesco, the game is not yet a six pointer: “Monchengladbach have a lot of quality in the team, they have the potential to make their way to the top of上海夜网 the table. However, I do not see a key game.”

Preview: AS Roma – Qarabag

AS Roma will be looking for the win that will guarantee them the presence in the knockout stages of Champions League tonight, as they travel to 4th-placed Qarabag.

Flashscore presents the key facts before the match:

Regardless of the result, or indeed any of the results in Group C, Qarabag are guaranteed to finish bottom. Roma will be crossing their fingers that already-qualified Chelsea field a strong team against Atlético Madrid, because if Chelsea lose and Roma fail to win then they will be knocked-out.

The frustration of Qarabag’s form (W0, D2, L3) in this season’s Champions League (CL) Group Stage is clearly affecting their discipline. They have received three red cards in their last three games (one per game), which is the worst disciplinary record of any team in the competition.

Roma’s coach, Eusebio Di Francesco, commented on this upcoming fixture to Mediaset Premium after the 3-1 win against Spal: “We wanted the win at all costs. It’s important to eliminate these little distractions. Spal barely had a shot on goal and we needed the win to prepare in the best way for Qarabag. Our objective is to qualify for the Champions League Round of 16 with a victory against Qarabag. The psychological approach we saw today was good and we need it again on Tuesday”.

In the CL Group Stage, Roma have taken a total of 24 corners (an average of 4.8 per game) and conceded 19 corners (an average of 3.8 per game). Qarabag have taken ten corners in total (an average of two per game) and have conceded 38 corners (an average of 7.6 per game).Niko Kovac urges Bayern Munich to remain ‘humble’ Andrew Smyth – Niko Kovac has called on Bayern Munich to stay focused and humble after thrashing Tottenham 7-2 in the Champions League.

Roma’s Argentinian attacker, Diego Perotti, is currently showing the best scoring form in the squad, with three goals in his last five games (all competitions). Roma’s other main goal threat, Edin Džeko (the top scorer in Serie A last season), has only scored one goal in his last nine games – will he find some much-needed goal scoring form?

At home this season, Roma have only been beaten in Serie A by Inter (the opening game of the season) and high-flyers Napoli. After winning their last five matches in a row, which included the CL fixture against Chelsea, they are expected to brus上海夜生活网h aside Qarabag.

Missing players

AS Roma: R. Karsdorp (knee injury), B. Peres (suspension), G. Defrel (doubtful)

Qarabag: P. Henrique (suspension), B. Guseynov (doubtful), A. Huseynov (doubtful).

Kanchelskis: Manchester derby important for United

Former Manchester United winger Andrei Kanchelskis believes the Red Devils have a “good chance” of winning the Premier League title once they defeat their local rivals

Manchester United will host rivals and league leaders Manchester City on Sunday, and the Devils must beat Guardiola’s side if they are still aiming at the title, according to Andrei Kanche上海夜生活论坛lskis. The two club giants will face each other in a very prestigious pre-Christmas derby of the English top-flight at Old Trafford.

Guardiola’s men have been unstoppable in the league so far, as the Citizens are the leaders, with Jose Mourinho’s side being second-placed with an 8-point deficit. If City manages to win, United will find themselves in trouble.

Kanchelskis played for both clubs during his career, and he says Mourinho’s men simply need a win, as they have been searching for a title since 2013.

“If Manchester United wins this derby game against Manchester City, they’ve a good chance to win the title,” the former United attacker told Omnisport.Solskjaer “very pleased” after another failure to win George Patchias – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he was “very pleased,” even though United failed to win yet again. It is now ten games on the road since…

“It’s a must-win game. They [United] need the three points. It’s a difficult few months over Christmas time, through December and January. There are too many games.”

“There is the Champions League, the Premier League, the FA Cup, League Cup and possibly national team duties as well. That’s too many, but we will see what happens,” the former Russia international explained.

The ex-winger suggested this game could decide who wins the Premier League title: “It [the derby] is important for both teams. If City drop points, there’s a good chance for United in this race to be crowned champions. If they don’t, it’s difficult for United to win the title.”

“Manchester City are playing good football. They are more attacking and have a lot of goal scorers. But we will see in December who is best – Mourinho or Guardiola,” Kanchelskis added.

Local knowledge can help United

Manchester United will host their local rivals City on Sunday, as the two Premier League giants go head-to-head at Old Trafford

Jose Mourinho’s side go into the derby on Sunday against Manchester City as underdogs, thanks to how Pep Guardiola’s team have played so far this season, as the Citizens are at the top of the league by 8 points as of right now.

It wasn’t the case during United’s 3-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates, though. The Red Devils seemed sharp and ready to go against the league leaders, until Paul Pogba picked up his red card, resulting in a suspension.

The French midfielder’s absence might affect United in a negative way, unless they figure out a way to replace him for the fixture, since Pogba has had a tremendous impact this season, despite only playing in 8 league games due to an injury. In these 8 games, he scored 3 goals and registered 5 assists.Solskjaer “very pleased” after another failure to win George Patchias – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he was “very pleased,” even though United failed to win yet again. It is now ten games on the road since…

Last season, when the two clubs faced each other, City came up with a 2-1 win, although United won an EFL Cup at home on their way to winning the trophy, ESPN claims. 上海夜生活City are eager to win, as they have spent more than any other club in the English top-flight for 3 straight seasons.

Two key players in United’s success last year were Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard. Both of them joined the Devils at the age of 7, so they know the importance of the derby, and they might prove to be crucial against City once again on Sunday.

Lingard has been quite impressive this season, as he went on to average a goal or assist every 78 minutes across all competitions, when he’s been on the field, which is a decent return. Rashford on the other hand, will probably be an option off the bench on Sunday, and Mourinho might need him.

Wilshere impressed by summer signings

The Gunners midfielder praise highly the impact of Lacazette and Kolašinac.

Jack Wilshere believes that adding Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolašinac to Arsenal’s ranks was a great deal. The Gunners went through yet another relatively quiet summer, with the main topic around the club being the possible departure of Alexis Sanchez.

However, the club from north London landed former Monaco striker Lacazette who took no time to settle in at his new home. Speaking to Arsenal Player about the Frenchman, Wilshere stated: “Lacazette, of course [has impressed].

“I think he’s gone a little bit under the radar with Morata [doing so well], but to come in from the French league to a big club in England and score four goals in his first seven or eight games [is very good].

“He’s doing well and he’s only going to get better. While Wenger spent big on their new striker, Arsenal added Kolašinac on a free tra上海夜生活论坛nsfer from Schalke and have seen the 24-year-old turn into the bargain of the summer.

“Sead’s turned into a real fans’ favourite because he’s no-nonsense, even in training.” Wilshere added regarding the defender.

“He’s a natural-born winner. He’s a monster physically and you’d hate to play against him.

“You look at when the winger receives the ball, he’s onto him, not giving him an inch. He wins the ball back a lot for the team, so he’s doing well.”

Wilshere needs more game time

England manager Gareth Southgate explained why he decided to not include Jack Wilshere in his squad against Germany and Brazil

According to GOAL, England boss Gareth Southgate says Jack Wilshere cannot expect to get back into the national squad without playing regularly for Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger stood beside Jack Wilshere, saying his midfielder deserves a recall after impressing performances in Europa League matches this season.

However, the 25-year-old has been left out of England’s squad for friendlies against world champions Germany and Brazil.

Southgate says he will speak to Wenger about Wilshere’s chances of returning in 2018 but in上海夜生活论坛sists he has to be playing more often, GOAL continues.

Jack Wilshere has only made one appearance in the Premier League this season, that one being a second-half substitute.

Gareth Southgate was asked about why Wilshere won’t get a chance in England’s national XI, and the coach said the midfielder first needs to play in Arsenal.Wijnaldum looking to repeat Champions League success Nedim Maric – Liverpool are the reigning winners of the Champions League. “I don’t know how you get in an England squad without getting in the Arsenal team,” the manager told a news conference.

Southgate said he doesn’t question Wilshere’s abilities, but he needs to see the midfielder play before he can make the decision to call him in.

“There is no question about his ability, his football brain or personality, we just need to see him playing before he comes back in because unfortunately there has been a history of injuries.”

“I’ll be having discussions with Arsene about him, we think he is a top player so for him it’s about game time,” Southgate added.

Manchester United’s defender Ashley Young however, has been named as one of the 25 players in England’s squad after not playing for his nation’s team for 4 years.

Southgate believes Young will provide a good option as a wing-back, since the defender had shown very good performances this season.

“Young’s performances warrant a recall. We want to play with wing-backs — I think it’s a role he can perform, left or right, very well. He’s played very well for Manchester United.”

“I haven’t spoken with him. The only thing that we can do is to wait and to speak after the Confederations Cup. I talked with Mendes about him. There is no need to be more worried than it is the case.”

“I am not thinking about him leaving. He is the best player we have, he is the best in the world and he has a contract. There are people who think he does this to get a wage increase, but in the eight years he has been here, he has never done that. He is not the type of person to come and ask for more money. “He is a man of integrity and he fully respects his obligations. There are many people that want to hurt him regarding these taxes and other things, and he feels that”, Perez added in the defense of his player.

Real’s president also wanted to specify that he did not ask the press not to publish pictures with Cristiano Ronaldo in a Real Madrid shirt when the subject of tax fraud is discussed: “These are small problems for us. It’s not at all true that I have called someone. There is a lot of distraction, but we cannot stay all day long to infirm news. The fans know perfectly how every journalist is, and people trust us.”

Ford Motor Co (F.N) has a cash buffer of $20 billion for a potential downturn event, Ford North American Chief Financial Offi上海夜网cer Matt Fields said at a J.P. Morgan Conference in New York.

General Motors (GM.N) has $18 billion in cash, with the potential to pay two years worth of dividends, the company’s finance head, Dhivya Suryadevara, said at the conference.

GM has modeled both moderate and severe downturn scenarios similar to 2008-2009 to get a sense of how it might affect profitability and cash flow at the No.1 U.S. car manufacturer, Suryadevara said.

“It’s something that we continually keep watching and updating to make sure that we’re all set for when the downturn does come,” Suryadevara said, adding that company does not see an imminent downturn.

Deferring non-essential capital expenditure and considering a shift to lower-priced vehicles are among the few things GM will look at as part of its “downturn planning” to save costs.

Ford said it was “proactively” evaluating its future moves, as it works with economists to model the severity of a possible recession.

Fear of a recession has dominated trading on Wall Street this year and spurred a bout of extreme volatility following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a new round of tariffs on Aug. 1.

Treasury’s Mnuchin says Amazon ‘destroyed’ U.S. retail sector

WASHINGTON ( ) – U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Wednesday that online giant Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) “destroyed the retail industry across the United States.”

Mnuchin said he looked forward to hearing the results of a Justice Department probe, announced on Tuesday, into whether big U.S. technology firms engage in anticompetitive practices, the strongest sign yet that the Trump administration is stepping up its scrutiny of Big Tech.

“If you look at Amazon, although they’re certain benefits to it, they’ve destroyed the retail industry across the United States,” Mnuchin told CNBC. “I don’t have an opinion other than I think it’s absolutely right the attorney general is looking into these issues and I look forward to listening to his recommendations to the president.”

Amazon defended itself, saying that 90% of all sales occur in上海夜生活网 brick-and-mortar stores.

“Today, independent sellers make up more than 58% of physical gross merchandise sales on Amazon, and their sales have grown twice as fast as our own, totaling $160 billion in 2018,” a spokesman for Amazon said.

A Justice Department spokesman declined to say on Tuesday which companies it would scrutinize under the antitrust probe, but said the review would consider concerns raised about “search, social media, and some retail services online” – an apparent reference to Google, Amazon, Facebook Inc (FB.O), and potentially Apple Inc (AAPL.O).

Mnuchin also said the small amount of work that Google does with the Chinese government did not raise any concerns, despite President Donald Trump’s calls last week for his administration to investigate the issue.

“The president did look into that as well as I,” Mnuchin said. “Google is an American company who wants to help the U.S.”

Deutsche Bank capital-boosting debt dips on restructuring fears

LONDON ( ) – Deutsche Bank’s capital-boosting Additional Tier I (AT1) debt issues fell on Monday on worries over future challenges Germany’s biggest lender may face in a planned overhaul.

Concerns centered on Deutsche Bank’s decision to lower minimum capital buffers, a pool of assets designed to absorb losses, after it launched one of the biggest overhauls of its investment bank since the 2008 financial crisis on Sunday.

The debt had earlier risen after Deutsche Bank said it will pay coupons on its bank capital debt.

“A substantial restructuring was needed to address the bank’s sluggish p上海夜生活论坛erformance,” ING analyst Suvi Platerink Kosonen said, adding: “The measures involve substantial execution risks and lowering the capital buffers makes the bank more vulnerable to any headwinds”.

Deutsche Bank’s U.S. dollar Additional Tier 1 perpetual bond, callable in November 2021, were down 0.70 cents on the dollar at 93.51, off an earlier high of 94.41.

Two euro-denominated issues, both callable in May 2027, were also down, reversing early gains.

“I guess (the early gain) was a knee-jerk reaction on the stock being up 5% plus, but as people digest the details, then it is difficult to get AT1 support,” said Steve Hussey, head of financial institutions credit research at Alliance Bernstein.

Deutsche Bank will now target a minimum common equity tier 1(CET1) ratio of 12.5% and a leverage ratio of 4.5% by 2020 and 5% by 2022. It had a CET1 ratio of 13.7% at the end of March.

Meanwhile, the cost of insuring exposure to Deutsche Bank’s debt through 5-year credit defaults swaps (CDS) fell by 3 basis points (bps) from Friday’s close to 61 bps, data from IHS Markit showed.

Deutsche Bank CDS fell for a sixth straight session.

Trump campaign preparing early focus on Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and…

WASHINGTON ( ) – President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign is preparing an early focus on Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, states that were instrumental to his improbable 2016 victory but where his support has softened, two campaign advisers said.

The decision to accelerate campaign organizing and eventually get the Republican president to make trips to the three states is a recognition that Trump’s path to re-election in 2020 will need to repeat some of the successes he had in 2016.

Advisers also see a need to bolster Trump’s support in Florida, a battleground state he considers his second home but where opinion polls show him struggling.

They also see an opportunity for gains in Minnesota and Colorado, two states Trump narrowly lost. The Trump team views those states as competitive places where the president can go on offense, according to the advisers, who asked not to be named so they could speak freely about the campaign strategy.

With 20 months to go until the November 2020 presidential election, Trump and his campaign team are still getting organized for what is expected to be a tough battle for a second four-year term.

Democrats seized control of the House of Representatives in last November’s congressional elections widely seen as a referendum on Trump’s storm-tossed first two years in office, while Republicans strengthened their grip on the U.S. Senate.

More than a dozen Democrats have lined up so far to challenge Trump, and some Republicans are also considering running against him.

Chris Jackson, a pollster for Ipsos, which conducts polls with , said Trump, however, looked to be in a competitive position for re-election at this point, given his approval rating is hovering between 40 percent and 45 percent.

“Presidents with an approval rating above 40 percent generally have better than 50-50 odds of winning re-election,” he said. “He’s not an underdog if you take the big picture view.”

Trump’s support among Republican voters also remains strong.

CRITICAL STATES

Trump’s win in 2016 included unexpected victories in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, which form part of the country’s former industrial heartland. The trio of states had voted Democratic in recent presidential elections, but Trump caught Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton by surprise, winning them by a mere combined 77,000 votes.

An Emerson College poll of Michigan voters released on Sunday found Trump trailing all the leading potential Democratic challengers, including an 8-percentage-point deficit to former Vice President Joe Biden, who is considering a White House bid.

A Marquette Law School poll conducted in January during a government shutdown largely blamed on Trump found the president had a 44 percent approval rating among Wisconsin voters, with 52 percent disapproving. The political tracking organization Morning Consult found Trump down 7 points among Pennsylvania voters.

Asked about the re-election strategy, a senior Trump campaign official said the early focus on the three states had nothing to do with polling.

“It is about securing victory in states where the margin of victory was close in 2016,” the official said.

The official上海夜生活论坛 added: “These are not given Republican states. These are Trump states. Wisconsin had not gone red since 1984 and Pennsylvania and Michigan since 1988. Trump expanded the map, and now we must protect this territory.”

Republican strategist Scott Reed, who is not connected to the Trump campaign, said the three states would be critical for Trump.

“Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan put Trump over the top, and they are clearly where this next national election will be won or lost,” said Reed, who was campaign manager for Republican nominee Bob Dole’s 1996 White House campaign.

Aides say Trump has shown a keen interest in his re-election effort. In the absence of an obvious front-runner among the Democrats, the president has concentrated his attacks on what he calls the Democrats’ trend toward socialism with their “Green New Deal.”

Trump has talked privately about some of the Democratic field, telling allies that Senator Kamala Harris of California had the best campaign rollout. He described Biden as “dumb” in a lunch with television anchors ahead of his State of the Union address on Feb. 5, a source familiar with the lunch said.

Trump’s campaign team recently showed the president a slide show outlining how to organize, tie up Republican nominating delegates and control the Republican presidential nomination process to fend off any challengers, a Republican official familiar with the presentation said.

“We are running a comprehensive, state-of-the-art campaign,” the senior campaign official said.

Outlook uncertain for Japan’s whaling industry despite commercial…

MINAMIBOSO, Japan ( ) – When Yachiyo Ichihara was a child in Wada, one of Japan’s oldest whaling villages, she’d go down to the harbor with a bucket and carry it home full of freshly butc上海夜网hered whale meat.

“It’s really delicious; that’s what I grew up eating,” the 72-year-old said. “Whale is something you’d gather your family together and eat. It’s real home cooking.”

In those days, men would peddle the meat from carts, calling “Whale, whale” as they went door to door. But in 1986, a whaling moratorium drove prices up and made whale a luxury food.

Ichihara now runs a whale restaurant in the Wada district of Minamiboso, on the Pacific coast just east of Tokyo, and should be celebrating Japan’s decision to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and resume commercial whaling on July 1. Instead, she and others involved in the business worry about the future.

“I’m really anxious, not expectant,” Ichihara said.

Though Japan’s post-Christmas announcement sparked widespread condemnation and fears for the world’s whales, the prospect of growth in whaling is far from certain, both environmentalists and whaling advocates say.

“In the past 30 years, all kinds of foods have come into Japan; there are so many things to eat,” said Kazuo Yamamura, president of the Japan Whaling Association. “It’s no longer a situation where if you produce lots of whale meat, you’re going to make lots of money.”

Barely 300 people are directly connected to whaling, and whale represented only about 0.1 percent of Japan’s total meat consumption in 2016, according to government data.

About 4,000-5,000 metric tons of whale meat are supplied to Japan annually, amounting to 40-50 grams of whale for each Japanese person, said Joji Morishita, Japan’s retiring IWC commissioner. That’s about the mass of half an apple.

“The question is, is there enough demand, enough feasibility and enough viability for commercial whaling – or commercial whale eating – to take place in Japan?” he said.

KEY SUPPORTERS

Whaling supporters include Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Toshihiro Nikai, head of Abe’s conservative ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), both of whose districts have long whaled. Nikai’s base includes Taiji, made notorious for dolphin hunts in the Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove.”

That high-profile support helped Japan finally leave the IWC, said Kiyoshi Ejima, an LDP lawmaker from the same area as Abe and a former four-term mayor of Shimonoseki, where the country’s based its “scientific whaling” mother ship and fleet. Five smaller ships, which carried out coastal whaling under an IWC loophole, will take the lead after July 1.

“Previous prime ministers were afraid of what’d be said if they left, that Japan would become a villain,” he told .

But environmentalist Patrick Ramage says the decision ended up being an “elegant” masterstroke that gave almost everybody something they wanted.

“Ostensibly there is a defiant, almost nationalistic expression of intent to resume commercial whaling” in Japan, said Ramage, director of marine conservation at International Fund for Animal Welfare. “But it becomes clear for anybody genuinely interested in the conservation of these whale species and their welfare … that whales are better off.”

Japan has not yet set its hunt quota. But many in the industry believe the number taken will fall between the 180 minkes and sei whales taken in the Northern Pacific and the 330 minkes hunted in the Antarctic.

The decision to leave the IWC, which will limit whaling to Japan’s exclusive economic zone, may also save money because ships won’t have to travel to the Antarctic. About 5.1 billion yen ($47.05 million) was budgeted for whaling in 2019.

“We’ll have to see how it goes this year – how much they take, how much it sells,” Ejima said. “We’re basically feeling our way.”

FADING APPETITES

Though a 2018 government survey found that about 70 percent of Japanese supported leaving the IWC, Morishita said the response was driven largely by opposition to anti-whalers.

A recent informal Yahoo Japan poll of nearly 20,000 people said 58.2 percent liked eating whale and 28.3 did not, while 13.5 percent had never eaten it. Older Japanese remember eating whale in school lunches but few seek it out.

In Wada, though whales are everywhere – including a giant skeleton by a museum and metal whales on a seawall – most people there on a recent afternoon were either surfing, driving, or fishing near the concrete dock where whales are drawn up to be butchered.

“I haven’t had whale but now I want to try,” said Kazushi Yago, 36, who stopped by a roadside store featuring local whale products. “I’m a bit nervous about how it tastes, though.”

But 63-year-old Tsuneo Tsuruoka said he’d had whale as a child and it wasn’t an experience he would repeat.

“I like beef better,” he said. “The food culture has changed.”
